Davis Wins the Battle, but Parker
Wins the War
LAS VEGAS -- Will Davis did what he had to do by winning Saturday
night's AMA Grand National dirt track final at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway's half-mile dirt oval, but Scott Parker nailed down his
eighth AMA Grand National championship by finishing seventh.
Davis was the only rider that had a slim chance of wresting the title away from Parker, but he needed some bad luck to visit Parker, since the all-time winningest rider needed only to finish 17th or better to secure his eighth title.
Davis took the lead early and was never seriously challenged on his TCR Racing Harley-Davidson. While Davis was cruising home to his seventh win of the season, a great battle raged for second. In the final lap it was Rich King passing and narrowly holding off the legendary Jay Springsteen and up-and-comer Joe Kopp.
"I can't think of a better place to win than Las Vegas," said Davis, who hails from Goldsboro, N.C. "We'll have a great party tonight. I gave it my best shot, but we're gonna come back and try to knock off Parker again next year. He's a great rider."
Parker, 35, of Swartz Creek, Mich., heads into next Sunday's season finale at Del Mar, Calif., with the title secure. He will be gunning for his 84th-career AMA Grand National victory.
"I take my hat off to Will (Davis) and his team," said Parker. "He had a great season and I had to give it my all to beat him."
