Mladin Wins, Chandler Champ
LAS VEGAS -- Australian Mat Mladin won the final round of the MBNA Superbike Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and set a course record in the process. Mladin, racing a Ducati, pulled away from the pack on the first lap and held the lead for the remaining 24 laps, averaging 90.154 m.p.h. on the 2.5-mile infield course at Las Vegas, breaking Doug Chandler's 1996 race record of 90.094 m.p.h. Chandler, who earned the pole Saturday, took his third MBNA Superbike championship by racing to a cautious eighth-place finish. Miguel Duhamel took second in the Las Vegas finale, edging out Aaron Yates with a dramatic last lap charge.

Mladin spent most of the race well ahead of the pack after early challenger, Rich Oliver, crashed unhurt on his Yamaha. Mladin's lead began to dissipate in the final laps as the desert heat began to take its toll on the Ducati's tires. Second-place finisher Duhamel on his Honda and third-place Team Suzuki rider Aaron Yates began to close the gap on Mladin, but could not catch him before the checkered flag. Mladin's gap was a scant 0.559 seconds at the checkered flag.

Reigning MBNA Superbike Series Champion Doug Chandler knew he needed only to finish 15th-place or better to win the 1997 Championship. Chandler spent most of the race riding his Kawasaki conservatively and finished eighth, enough to add another to his 1990 and 1996 American Motorcyclist Association Superbike Series titles.

Aaron Yates won the Pro Honda Oils SuperSport support race, his second win of the season. Yates was followed by Suzuki teammate Pascal Picotte in second-place and Jason Pridmore in third.

Rich Oliver won the Elf Fuels 250 Grand Prix, his 20th victory in a row -- extending the record for the longest winning streak in AMA Pro Racing history.

Eric Bostrom was the winner of the Progressive Insurance Harley-Davidson Super Twins race. Bostrom has dominated the Super Twins series, winning ten of 11 1997 series races. David Estok placed second, and Nate Wait followed in third-place.

Chandler Wins Pole for Las Vegas Superbike Race
LAS VEGAS -- Reigning MBNA Superbike Series Champion Doug Chandler took the pole Saturday at the Nevada Classic at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Chandler's run of 91.965 miles per hour, was a new motorcycle track record on the 2.5-mile road course.

While it was no surprise that Chandler might take the pole, the 13th of his career and his fourth this season, some might say his determination to lead the field is unnecessary as he is nearly uncatchable in the points race. Chandler, with 280 points, need only finish 15th-place or better to capture the 1997 MBNA Superbike Series Championship. Chandler's closest competitor is 1995 series champion Miguel Duhamel, with 260 points.

"I was fortunate that I got a good clear lap," said Chandler, of Salinas, Calif. "I was really only concerned about a front row position. I feel comfortable, and what I do tomorrow depends on what the pace is like."

Chandler is known as the master of consistency, and things look good for him at Sunday's race. He and his Kawasaki machine won last year's race at Las Vegas, which was also the season finale for the MBNA Superbike Series. If he takes the 1997 Championship it will be the third of his career, having won the 1990 and 1996 Championships.

Second on Sunday's starting grid is 15th-ranked Harley-Davidson rider Thomas Wilson of Oregon, Ohio. Wilson turned in a 91.856 m.p.h. run on his VR1000. This marks the first time either Wilson or a Harley-Davidson have seen the front row this season.

Australian Mat Mladin will start in third with a 91.674. Mladin is currently ranked third in the MBNA Superbike Series with 252 points.

Rich Oliver surprised everyone by putting his Yamaha on the front row in only his second Superbike race of the season. Oliver, the current AMA 250cc Grand Prix Champion, was given a chance to ride the last two Superbike races of the year for Yamaha and this will be his first-ever start on the front row of a Superbike final. Oliver's speed was 91.622.

The final round of the MBNA Superbike Series Nevada Classic at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will start at 1:40pm on Sunday, Oct. 5.
