1998 AMA Grand National Dirt Track Champions

Scott Parker -- Grand National Living Legend

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Already the winningest rider in the history of American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Grand National Dirt Track racing, the legendary Scott Parker had another awe-inspiring season in 1998.

After a series of late-season battles with riders Chris Carr, Rich King and Will Davis, Parker captured the 1998 Grand National title with a win at the Oct. 11 season finale at the Del Mar, Calif., Mile. The win earned Harley-Davidson rider Parker a record ninth Grand National Championship -- the last five of those championships in a row -- and allowed him to break Carrol Resweber's 1961 record of four consecutive titles.

Parker's 1998 Grand National season had an auspicious start. Like NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, Parker's remarkable career was missing a win at Daytona. After watching Earnhardt win the 1998 Daytona 500 just three weeks prior to the AMA Grand National race there, Parker remarked that perhaps it was now his turn. He went on to win the March 7 season-opener at the Daytona short-track, and would go on to take six more victories and an additional three podium finishes before winning the 19-race, 1998 Grand National Championship title. With his 1998 finishes tallied, Parker has amassed an incredible 91 wins over the course of his 20-year professional career.
