SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9

The MGM Grand is seething with anticipation for tonight's race. It's a great feeling to wander the casino and hallways of the hotel and see so many fans, from so many different parts of the world, wearing shirts emblazoned with the names of their favorite rider. Early in the day, the pits are full of riders
checking in, and curious onlookers. Some spectators -- attracted by all the U.S. Open fanfare -- are attending their very first Supercross race. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos from Saturday morning.

The Saturday night opening ceremonies were indeed grand.  Performers from the Cirque de Soleil fell from the ceiling on bungee cords, while laser lights colored the whole MGM Grand Garden.

The Mazda Troy Lee truck took to the track in between motos. The people who have created all of Mazda's motorcycle sponsorships are in the truck: That's Jack Stavana and Kevin Brown in the cab, and Mazda spokeswoman Amy Hayes in the back.

AMA Motocross/Supercross Chief Tech Inspector Jay Mitrowitz an Ezra Lusk watch the 80cc races outside. Ezra was cheering on younger brother Shane, and 80cc competitor.

Mazda's Kevin Brown, flanked by Michelle Falls on the left, and Amy Hayes on the right.

James Stewart - winner of 80cc race two, being interviewed by Leeann Tweeden.

Two of Las Vegas' finest contemplate a run at the track aboard their trick mountain/patrol bikes.

Something special must be going on. Jeff Emig's guests for the evening were two of the planet's fastest four-wheel racers: Fed Ex Champcar pilots Paul Tracy and Jimmy Vasser.

Last year's U.S. Open winner Damon Huffman catches a little air before returning to the Grand Garden.

1999 AMA Mazda Truck Motocross Nationals Champ Greg Albertyn works the bowl outside.

Ezra in the hunt.

R.C. is coming at you. Ryno is about to enter the whoops.

Albee, Huffman and Heath Voss.

Three wide over the tabletop.

Mr. Emig is all smiles after taking the win. Just one more to go and he's the $100,000 man.

Speedvision's Larry Maeirs interviews Fro.

Your podium for the evening: R.C., Fro and the Rock.

Steve Lamson checks in his privateer Honda. Steve trailered the bike here on his
own, but has support out of the Team Planet Honda rig.

R.C. and friends listen in at the rider briefing.

AMA Motocross/Supercross race manager Duke Finch briefs the riders. That's "The Man," Roger DeCoster, sitting on the bumper.

AMA Motocross officials Jeff Canfield and Erica Harbaugh pose in front of a rolling work of art - the orginal, hand-painted Mazda Troy Lee prototype.

That's Elvis' 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II, parked in the lobby of the MGM Grand Garden. The Lincoln, along with many other beauties from Elvis' personal fleet, are on the auction block this weekend at the MGM. Ryan Hughes was overheard saying that he'll buy the car if he wins the U.S. Open.

Four-strokes in Saturday afternoon practice.

During Saturday's Freestyle practice, crowd-pleaser Edgar Torronteras shows us why he's nicknamed "The Spanish Fly."

Upon close inspection, Edgar says the Grand Garden's lighting system meets with his approval. . .

. . .and the launch ramp looks OK too.

After a good workout, Edgar lets his Kawasaki do the flying for him.

Jeff Emig does a little TV on the outdoor portion of the track.

Multi-time motocross/supercross Champ Rick Johnson and Speedvision commentator Dave Despain do some preview work with cameraman Pat.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8

McGrath will not be riding. Word is he held out for show money and the promoters said no. Even if he changed his mind he has no bike -- no Chaparral rig here. He's here, walking around, just not racing.

There was a freesyle exhibition Friday night. Hopefully the digital camera will be some better shots.

AMA Motocross Horizon Award winner Travis Pastrana does some checking on his ramp. Just like Evel used to do.

The pit area in the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

FMF just setting up. Yep, that's Jeff Emig's luxobus there.

Friday morning track set-up.
