McGrath clinches seventh AMA 250cc
Supercross title
Roncada scores AMA 125cc East Region crown
Apr.
30 - The winningest AMA Supercross rider of all time added
another No. 1 plate to the Chaparral/Mazda Yamaha 18-wheeler Saturday night. Jeremy
McGrath clinched his seventh AMA 250cc Supercross title at the penultimate
round of the series Sat.,
April 29 at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL. Fellow Yamaha rider Stephane
Roncada also clinched the hotly contested AMA 125cc East Region crown with a
second-place finish.
In typical McGrath fashion, the seven-time Supercross champ snagged the holeshot and promptly laid waste to the 250cc field easily winning ahead of challenger David Vuillemin on the factory Yamaha. Vuillemin had to beat McGrath to have any chance of winning the title at the series' final round May 6 in Las Vegas, but a first-turn crash claimed the Frenchmen who managed to come from behind and finish a very respectable second. Honda's Kevin Windham rounded out the podium in third.
The second-place finish of Yamaha of Troy's Roncada turned out to be enough to win the title after FMF Honda's Brock Sellards went down in a first-turn pile-up. Roncada and Sellards, who were tied in the points coming into Saturday night's race, led Team Suzuki's Travis Pastrana by only 6 points. With Sellards out of the title chase after the first-turn crash, Roncada knew if he finished ahead of Pastrana the title was his. Sixteen-year-old Supercross rookie Pastrana went for it, trying to pass Roncada for the lead early on, but went down trying. Roncada followed teammate and defending champ Ernesto Fonseca to the finish. Pastrana did fly back into third place at the end.
You can see the Joliet Supercross today on ABC Sports at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, right before the NASCAR race. Check your local listings for more info.
