DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 14, 2013) – With over half of the 2013 GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season in the books, the battle for the coveted Saddlemen Rookie of the Year award and the $5,000 payout that goes along with it is heating up.
To be eligible for the Saddlemen Rookie of the Year award, riders must be competing in their first season of AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike competition and are required to display the Saddlemen logo on their rider suit and motorcycle during all competition sessions. The $5,000 year-end payout will go to the eligible rider who earns the most points in the GoPro Daytona SportBike point standings this season. Princeton, Kentucky’s Jake Lewis (Meen Motorsports) leads the chase by a mere three points over rival and Ormond Beach, Florida product James Rispoli (National Guard/Celtic Racing).
At first glance, one would assume that Lewis would have a far greater advantage over Rispoli heading into the final rounds after comparing Lewis’s five top-five finishes to Rispoli’s single fifth-place finish at Mid-Ohio last month. However, Lewis’s 27th place finish in the DAYTONA 200 to begin the season and his 11th place effort at Barber has given Rispoli’s effort life.
With the series heading to New Jersey Motorsports Park in September for the New Jersey Lottery Devil’s Showdown, Rispoli looks to have the upper hand as he excelled at the particular venue last year in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport competition. Rispoli dominated Race 1, claiming victory by more than 10 seconds over the second-place finisher and a whopping 36.629 seconds over Lewis, who finished 15th in the race. Rispoli got the best of Lewis again in Race 2 as the two finished second and third, respectively.
The trifling point differential between Lewis and Rispoli will make for an interesting conclusion to an already action-packed GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season. With the Saddlemen Rookie of the Year chase coming down to the wire and some serious cash on the line, look for the two young stars to give it everything they’ve got this weekend in the highly anticipated match between them and the rest of the GoPro Daytona SportBike lineup.
