MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports Congratulate Successful 2012 Supercross Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 8, 2012) – MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports – organizers of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing – wish to congratulate Feld Motor Sports on a successful 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship season. Following exceptional on-track action throughout the winter and spring, three riders emerged victorious as champions to complete a historic season, which came to an exciting conclusion last Saturday in Las Vegas.

For the second straight season, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto secured the premier Supercross Class title, becoming just the fifth rider in history to do so. Additionally, Villopoto wrapped up his championship with four races remaining in the series to establish a historic mark of winning earlier than any rider before him.
Unfortunately, shortly after successfully defending his crown, Villopoto suffered a season-ending knee injury and will be forced to forego his attempt to accomplish the same feat this summer in Lucas Oil Motocross.

“Ryan has emerged as the sport’s most prominent competitor in the last year-and-a-half and it truly is unfortunate to know he won’t be able to defend his 450 Class Championship at the Nationals,” said MX Sports President Davey Coombs. “What he’s achieved over the last two seasons is truly impressive and he will be missed this summer. However, we are excited to watch such a deeply-talented field of riders take to the track in hopes of claiming the vacant 450 Class title.”

In Villopoto’s absence, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, the 2010 Lucas Oil Motocross Champion, Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s Davi Millsaps, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer will compete over the course of 24 motos, continuing their lead roles into the 450 Class. Also, Team Yoshimura Suzuki will be represented by a pair of riders who are familiar to success at the Nationals in former race winner Brett Metcalfe and 2008 Lucas Oil Motocross Champion James Stewart, who officially signed with the team this week.

The Supercross Lites class was also host to a little history of its own as well with GEICO Honda sweeping the East and West Region titles for the first time in team history. Justin Barcia successfully defended his East Region crown, cementing his status as a contender for the 250 Class Championship, while Eli Tomac broke through for his first career professional title in the West Region. Both former winners in Lucas Oil Motocross will challenge reigning 250 Class Champion Dean Wilson aboard his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki.

A special nod also goes out to Barcia for winning the Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout last Saturday night at the series finale in Las Vegas “Everyone at MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports would also like to congratulate the team at Feld Motor Sports for once again producing a captivating Supercross championship,” added Coombs. “The entire season delivered its trademark unpredictable racing and is what we hope to duplicate this summer. Based on the competition we’ve seen so far, I think we’re in store for a memorable year at the Nationals.”

The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will commence in just a couple weeks, kicking off on May 19 from Sacramento, Calif., and the legendary Hangtown Motocross Classic.
