Created in 2009, AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike was envisioned as a class in which a variety of brands and configurations could compete on a level playing field, putting the emphasis on rider talent. Since that very competitive first season, the class has exploded and provides some of the best racing seen anywhere in the world — packs of 10 or more ferociously-battling bikes are almost expected.
Like National Guard SuperBikes, GoPro Daytona SportBikes are race-tuned descendants of some of today’s top high-performance production motorcycles. Eligible bikes in GoPro Daytona SportBike include the Yamaha YZF-R6, Suzuki GSX-R600, Honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, Buell 1125R, Aprilia RSV1000R, Ducati 848, Triumph Daytona 675 and the KTM 990 Super Duke. Power comes from a variety of four-stroke, multi-cylinder modified production engines and minimum bike weights range from 355 to 375 lbs., depending on engine configuration, displacement and number of cylinders.
Engine rules mandate primarily stock parts with minimal modifications and tuning and – like National Guard SuperBike – stock transmissions, but that doesn’t mean GoPro Daytona SportBikes are just out for a weekend cruise, often reaching top speeds in excess of 175 mph. As in all GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing classes, Dunlop provides the series-standard racing tires for GoPro Daytona SportBike and competitors must use original equipment wheels. Brake components may be replaced with aftermarket items, but the use of carbon fiber, carbon composite or titanium materials for brake discs is not allowed. Sunoco 260GTX premium racing fuel is the exclusive standard for all classes of GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing.
The variety offered by GoPro Daytona SportBike rules doesn’t end with the motorcycles—there’s also a wide range of age and experience found among class riders. As competitors graduate from AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport to GoPro Daytona SportBike, they join an impressive field of international standouts, riders from National Guard SuperBike and many other genres of motorcycle racing, to compete in thrilling events that include the historic DAYTONA 200.
The DAYTONA 200 traces its history to 1937, when the inaugural race was run on the sands of Daytona Beach. In 1961, the event became synonymous with Daytona International Speedway and has since seen many great names in motorcycling history win the storied event. Run at the culmination of Daytona Bike Week on Saturday afternoon, the 200-mile race is the only endurance race on the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing schedule, but the parity in performance combined with the depth of field found in the GoPro Daytona SportBike division all but guarantees a photo finish at the end of every race.
