(March 30, 2012) - First, I wanted to thank all of my family, friends, sponsors and fans who cheered me on during my very first event with AMA Pro Racing. It was my first time at Daytona International Speedway, so I was pretty nervous and excited at the same time. I have also never had to qualify for a race before so that added a whole new dimension to racing for me but it was great!
The qualifying went ok for me getting midpack in 25th position out of about 50 bikes. The Dynojet / ZAG Racing / Yamaha R6 pulled strong around Daytona and throughout the first race I picked up 10 positions. A little bit of bar-banging on the final bend of the banking made me lose some drive and relegated us back to 18th but we were still very happy to make up the positions during the race! My laptimes were decent too dipping into the 54’s. Still need to make up a couple of seconds to catch the front pack but I am confident that we will get there.
On Saturday morning I crashed out in morning warmup. It was just a silly mistake on my part as I ran off track coming off the back straight. I kept it up fine and went through the grass but didn’t realize that since it was still early morning, the grass was still covered in dew. I grabbed a bit of throttle coming back on the pavement and the bike high-sided me. I went over the front of the bike and I guess my glove hooked in the windscreen which not only pulled my glove off but tore a pretty decent gash on the top of my left hand. It took 25 stitches to close it up and even though I wanted back out there for Race 2, there was no time after I finally got out of the medical center.
The team is in final preparations for Road Atlanta coming in April and even though I am running the West Coast Championship, I am still excited to race each and every round on the AMA Pro Racing calendar. I think it’s going to be an amazing round for me as I get back to a little bit more of a traditional road-course. Still got to sort some things out to qualify higher but I learned plenty at Daytona!
See you all there and if you can’t be there, don’t forget to check and see if you can get SPEED2 as that’s where my races are broadcast!
