Cory West Blogs Homestead and Being the New Team Leader
NEWS December 9, 2011
The Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team decided to head down to Homestead Miami Speedway to participate in the final CCS race of the year so we could get some track time. We had heard that AMA Pro was planning on going down to Miami-Homestead for next season, so it was a great opportunity for us to learn the track and get some data. I was super happy to ditch the winter wardrobe for a weekend and cut some laps on the race bike!
Most of the team flew down a day early so we could play tourist for a day. We cruised down into the Florida keys and had a great day away from the norm. This was also the first time that the new team was all together and going to ride on track. After the first day of riding I realized what a force our team will be next season with Jake in supersport and Benny and myself in DSB. For the first time in my career I've taken the role as the older, more experienced rider on the team. It's kind of a weird feeling, especially because of the speed these young kids have, but its nice to help them with advice whenever possible.
The races went well on Sunday, but I struggled a bit with back row starting spots. The kids were a bit quicker but it was really fun watching them on track. I also got to throw a leg over Tim Bemisderfer's Superbike prepped by Vesrah Suzuki for the final race of the day. It's been a while since I've ridden a proper 1000, and that thing didn't disappoint! I had a great battle for 2nd place but came up just a hair short and finished 3rd in the big Open Shootout race.
Overall the weekend was a success. We all have a good feeling for the track and that will make coming back much easier for the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season. Until then, I wish everyone Happy Holidays and I'll see you in 2012!!
