Race Report - Gearzy Rider Josh Galster

(March 22, 2012) - Daytona was the first race of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season, March 15-17th. The Daytona 200 is the only race on the AMA Pro series where the riders race the banking of Daytona along with the infield for 200 miles, 57 laps. This event is typically a challenging race because it's the first race of the year, the bikes are new, along with some of the teams, the tires are quite different, and it's an endurance race of 200 miles. But I completed the race and finished 21st, just missing out on the top 20.

After a long night Wednesday working on the bike, we got on the track Thursday morning for practice. After only 4 laps, i got taken out coming into Turn 1. Another rider and I were running side by side through the tri-oval when he came across my front tire and squeezed me to the inside. We made contact and i went sliding through Turn 1 along with my bike. We hustled to get the damaged parts replaced and I got back out for second practice, but we were testing fuel consumption and misfigured and I ran out and had to come in, shortening my practice time. We changed tires for qualifying which I liked as that gave me more grip, but I couldn't ever get hooked up with a good draft and ended up qualifying poorly, having to start 33rd of 46.

I had an okay start, but had to get through a bunch of riders to get to a faster pack. Once I made my way forward I hooked up with a fast group and had a blast drafting, passing, and battling with about 6 riders. We pitted twice for new rear tires and fuel and did okay with those. Drafting is so important and for much of the middle stint of the race I was without anyone to work with and pushed my own air for a lot of laps. I was able to work my way up and gained 12 positions. Near the end there was a small group to run with and I set myself up to draft toward the finish, just missing out on 20th by .084 of second.

Daytona is in the books and it's time to get the bike ready for Road Atlanta. I look forward to seeing you there. Make sure to come by the Gearzy pit and say Hi!!

Overall, it was a really good weekend and i'm excited for the rest of the season. I especially want to thank Billy from Gearzy; Zach Gordon; Ben Fox; the Gearzy riders and crew; Colin Harmer; Jon Cornwell; James McHarge, an instructor from Lincoln Technologies, for making the endurance tank; the Klepper family; Alan from ADD Crusher; the Dimick crew; along with EDR Performance; Grandprix Motorsports and gpguns.com; Perfect Motors Brazil; California Superbike School; Arai helmets; KFG racing; and all the fans and my family.
