Tooele, Utah (May 26, 2012) – Huntley Nash and David Gaviria faced trying conditions as they qualified in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike for LTD Racing on Saturday at Miller Motorsports Park. Nash took 14th and Gaviria was 22nd during the worst conditions the AMA Pro regulars have raced in during the 2012 season.
Rain and wind hindered the action at the 3.0-mile circuit west of Salt Lake City at this weekend’s combined World Superbike/AMA Pro race meet. By the time Daytona SportBike qualifying began, the rain had stopped but the riders had to deal with strong winds and some damp sections of the track.
For Nash, the day was a test of getting the most out of his equipment while dealing with the weather. “The conditions weren’t very good so I wasn’t going to make a mistake and set us back for the race,” said Huntley Nash, who has shown increased competitiveness in his second year in the DSB class. “The wind was really bad. One of my bikes was set up stiffer then the other and it handled best, but the engine was tired in that one. I tried the other bike but it had some chatter and the lap time just wasn’t as quick even though it had more power. We’ll make some changes and try to jump up a few positions tomorrow for the race.”
For Gaviria, getting into a rhythm was difficult. “Today wasn’t so good for me. In qualifying, the bike was going wide through the turns. We tried two things to help but it did not work. We need to change the shock or the suspension but it should be better. The wind was very difficult to get into the turns and when you opened the throttle, it spun more than normal because of the wind.”
Huntley and David will have another session of qualifying for the race on Sunday, then compete in the 16-lap final at 4:10 PM local time.
