ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 1, 2012) – Josh Hayes and his rapidly rising teammate Josh Herrin qualified first and second in today’s provisional pole session at Road America. It was a repeat of the 1-2 punch that the Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team delivered in the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike race at Miller Motorsports Park.
In the morning practice session, two-time reigning SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes was more than two seconds faster than anyone else on the racetrack, and it was a harbinger of things to come in the afternoon’s provisional qualifying session. In both of the sessions, Josh was the only rider in the 2:11s. With final qualifying scheduled form tomorrow morning, he’s poised to break Road America’s all-time SuperBike track record held by Mat Mladin.
“This is a favorite track of mine, if not my favorite track,” Josh said. “It suits me well, and I’m really comfortable on the bike. It was a little cool and windy today so, if conditions improve for tomorrow morning’s session, I think we have a realistic shot at getting the record.”
Meanwhile, rider of the #2 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R1, Josh Herrin, made a dramatic jump in qualifying. On the final lap of his session, Josh “pole”-vaulted his Yamaha YZF-R1 into second position to take his spot next to teammate Josh Hayes on the provisional front row.
Final qualifying is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:40 AM CST, and the SuperBike race will go green later in the day at 3:15 PM CST.
