Birmingham, AL (June 22, 2012) – Gulfport, MS, native Josh Hayes is obviously used to the heat and humidity of the Deep South. He was a cool customer on the track in today’s provisional qualifying at Barber Motorsports Park, setting the fastest time on his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R1 by nearly half-a-second over the rest of the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike field. His teammate Josh Herrin set the fourth-fastest time and will be looking to improve his starting position in final SuperBike qualifying tomorrow morning.
With his family and friends in attendance and cheering him on, Josh Hayes, the two-time reigning SuperBike Champion and current points leader, went out on the blisteringly hot track in his usual workmanlike fashion and started clicking off fast lap after fast lap where he topped the charts throughout the entire provisional qualifying session.
And Josh reckons that he can go faster tomorrow. “I would expect that, tomorrow, we’ll see the fastest lap times of the weekend, with an early-morning second qualifying session and cooler track temperatures,” Josh predicted.
Meanwhile, rider of the #2 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R1, Josh Herrin is definitely looking forward to tomorrow morning’s session. Despite his years of experience on the YZF-R6, every track is a new one for Josh in his rookie SuperBike season. He gets stronger as he logs more laps with his R1, so look for him to remain on the front row in tomorrow morning’s final qualifying with an even faster time.
Final qualifying is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:40 AM CST, and the SuperBike race will go green later in the day at 3:15 PM CST.
