Lexington, OH (July 13, 2012) – Call it superstition, maybe, but the track seemed to have a strange feeling to it in Friday’s AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike provisional qualifying session at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. However, despite the Friday the 13th “spookiness,” two-time defending SuperBike champion Josh Hayes was the fastest rider on the track, putting his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R1 on the provisional pole. Josh’s identically first-named teammate Josh Herrin qualified third, with tomorrow morning’s final qualifying session--and a chance to move up--yet to come.
“It almost felt like the track was alive. Just a weird feeling that I can’t explain. The tire choices are a little different than what we’ve had here in the past, so we had to work through that a little bit. I’m really quite surprised to be in the 25s, but I think we’ll go quicker tomorrow. This is a good racetrack for me. I have three SuperBike wins here, so I know what I need to do.”
Meanwhile, rider of the #2 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R1, Josh Herrin definitely knows what he needs to do. And that’s put himself closer to, if not in front of, his dominant teammate.
Final qualifying is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:40 AM EST, and the SuperBike race will go green later in the day at 3:15 PM EST.
