Birmingham, AL (June 22, 2013) – Cameron Beaubier, who earlier in the day, broke his own track record to earn the pole in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike competition, won today’s DSB Race 1 at Barber Motorsports Park aboard his #6 Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6. It was Cameron’s third win out of four races so far this season.
Cameron didn’t get the best of starts when the light turned green, but he got to work quickly and moved himself to the front in very short fashion. As the race progressed, Cameron methodically built a comfortable lead, which stretched out to more than five seconds by the time he took the win.
“We had a really good setup today,” Cameron said after the win. “I just wanted to start out the weekend getting really comfortable on the bike. I conserved my tires a little bit in the beginning, and that helped me because I was able to pull a decent gap as the laps wound down.”
Garrett Gerloff, who is Cameron’s teammate and rider of the #8 Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6, started from the front row and battled hard in a pack of three riders throughout the 21-lap event, but a slight mid-race bobble shuffled him back in that fast-riding trio, which caused him to have to settle for a sixth-place finish despite nearly snatching fifth position right at the checkered flag.
Garrett said “I got a pretty good start, and I was fifth in the first corner, and in the lead pack. I was able to make a pass and get into fourth. About midway through the race, I spun up coming down the hill and Dane (Westby) and J.D. (Beach) got past me. We stayed pretty tightly bunched up for the rest of the race, and I tried to make a move there at the end. I thought I had fifth, and it was a close finish, but I ended up sixth. We’ll re-group tonight, and I’ll try for a better result tomorrow.”
Daytona SportBike Race 2 from Barber Motorsports Park is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 PM CST.
